Loris Baz et le team Ten Kate Racing – Yamaha ont connu une journée riche en rebondissements samedi en Californie. Après être passé sous la barre des 1’24 lors de l’ultime séance d’essais libres, le Français, confiant, a en effet chuté durant son premier tour en Superpole.

Si le pilote Yamaha s’en est sorti indemne, sa YZF-R1 a quant à elle été endommagée. Mais grâce à l’excellent travail de son équipe, Loris Baz est parvenu à chasser le chrono dans les dernières minutes pour se qualifier en neuvième position. 

Depuis la troisième ligne, le Haut-Savoyard a réalisé un bon départ pour pointer huitième au premier passage. Septième à la mi-course, Loris Baz, qui a dû composer avec le grip exigeant du circuit américain, a finalement dû s’incliner face à Michael van der Mark et franchir l’arrivée à la huitième place. 

Satisfait, le représentant tricolore a néanmoins profité de cette journée pour poursuivre son apprentissage de la YZF-R1.

Loris Baz (8e) : « Cette journée s’est avérée un peu plus compliquée. Je suis malgré tout satisfait. L’ultime séance d’essais libres s’est très bien passée, mais j’ai chuté en Superpole dans mon premier tour. La moto a été beaucoup endommagée, mais encore une fois, l’équipe a accompli de l’excellent travail pour me permettre de me qualifier en troisième ligne à quelques minutes du drapeau à damier. Un grand merci à tout le monde ! Ils ont clairement sauvé mon week-end, car si j’avais dû m’élancer de la dernière place au départ des deux premières manches, cela aurait été nettement plus délicat. En course, face à des températures beaucoup plus élevées, nous avons dû composer avec le grip de la piste. Notre machine connait davantage de difficultés dans ces conditions… mais nous allons mettre l’accent sur cela. Nous figurons malgré tout dans le Top 8 et nous inscrivons des points. Nous sommes encore au début de l’aventure avec cette moto. C’est à nous de poursuivre le travail et de progresser au mieux pour essayer d’arracher une place parmi les cinq premiers demain. »

Loris Baz, eighth after an eventful day in California !

Loris Baz and his team Ten Kate Racing – Yamaha had a day full of ups and downs on Saturday in California. Having broken the 1’24 barrier in the final free practice session, the Frenchman was confident but ended up crashing on the first lap of Superpole.

While the Yamaha rider was unhurt, his YZF-R1 suffered some damage. Thanks to the great work of his team, Loris Baz was able to get back out in the final minutes of the session to qualify in ninth position.

Starting from the third row of the grid, the Haut-Savoyard made a good start to cross the line in eighth position at the end of the first lap. Seventh half way through the race, Loris Baz, having to face the demanding grip of the American circuit, was eventually forced to give in to Michael van der Mark to finish in eighth position.

The French rider was still happy to build his experience with the YZF-R1 today.

Loris Baz (8^th): “Today was a bit more difficult. Despite all, I am still happy. The final free practice session went really well but then I had a crash in Superpole on my first lap. The bike had a lot of damage but once again my team did an excellent job which allowed me to qualify on the third row of the grid only a few minutes before the chequered flag. Huge thanks to everyone! They clearly saved my weekend because if I had to start the first two races from the last position, it would have been a lot more difficult. In the race the temperature was a lot higher and we had to deal with the grip situation. Our bike still has some problems in these conditions.. but we will now focus on that. We still finished in the Top 8 and scored points. We have only just started our adventure with this bike. It is on us to continue working to improve as much as possible to get into the Top 5 tomorrow.”
