Danilo enjoys best weekend of the season at Indianapolis

Jules Danilo secured his best ever Grand Prix result today with 16th place at Indianapolis, although he was a little frustrated to miss out on his first points scoring finish by the narrowest of margins.

Today’s result came after the 19-year-old Frenchman put in his best qualifying performance of the season yesterday, finishing the timed session just 1.5s from pole and securing 26th position on the grid for today’s Moto3 race.

A strong start to the race saw Danilo make up places in the opening laps, to join onto the back of the battle for tenth place. The Ambrogio rider was able to match the pace of his rivals until spots of rain caused Fahmi Khairuddin to slow dramatically, which meant both riders lost contact with the group ahead.

Danilo continued to battle with the Malaysian rider for the remainder of the race, but despite leading out of the final corner, was passed for the final points scoring position just centimetres from the line.

Jules Danilo // 16th
“I was so close to a point scoring finish today, so it was frustrating to miss out by such a narrow margin within sight of the line. A good start and an aggressive first few laps saw me join the group containing Kent, Hanika, Navarro and Bastiannini, so I knew I was going well. With five laps to go I was sat behind Khairuddin when we had spots of rain on part of the circuit. He slowed immediately and it was difficult to get past him. By the time I’d managed it the group ahead had pulled away. I pushed really hard in the last five laps, but Khairuddin had no problem passing me on the straight every time. I retook 15th place on the final lap at turn four and I was still ahead of him exiting the final turn. I was praying he wouldn’t have enough to come past me but, just as I could see the line, he came around me to take the last point. While it’s frustrating to miss out on my first point, it was a good weekend and it means we go to the next race at Brno with confidence high.”
